MLML Network Device Naming Convention

To assist in the management of the MLML network the following standard naming convention will be used: XX###(x)##.The first 2 alpha characters identify the device type as per the following key:

1. ap - wireless access point
2. wrb - wireless bridge
3. ps - print server
4. sw - switch
5. rt - router
6. fw - firewall
7. sv - server
8. dt - desktop
9. lt - laptop
10. st - storage
11. vp - voice phone

The next 3 numeric characters designate the room location such as 102, 203. Where an alpha character is also used in the room name this will also be included as a forth character.

The last 2 numeric characters will be the unit number where single digit numbers will have a preceding 0: 08,09,10,11.

A complete NDN (Network Device Name) will have this representation:

1. A desktop PC in the Library copy room will be: dt102b03 for the third desktop in room 102b.
2. A wireless access point in Room 511 will be: ap51101
